The History of Doll Collecting
Believe it or not, doll collecting has been around for thousands of years. The first doll was found in an archaeology dig was dated back to 600 B.C. There are also dolls that have been discovered in Egypt dating back to 2000 BC. They found them buried with their owner, so they are well preserved. They were made out of wood, sanded down and painted with faces. They even included hair. Usually the hair was made of beads or strings of clay.
Archaeologists found dolls made specifically for girls in Greek and Roman graves. The archaeologist’s hypothesis was girls played with them then passed them along as gifts to other younger girls or gave them as gifts to a favorite goddess. They have found dolls made of primitive material such as clay, wood and fur.
There are even some dolls from the prehistoric period. They have a common theme of being created as lifelike as possible. Some of the dolls even had removable clothes and movable arms and legs.
Historic doll making became popular in the 16th and 17th century. They were the first professional doll makes. The craftsmanship was exquisite in detail more so than what was produced in earlier years.
When the 19th century rolled around, there were new materials to make dolls. Europe became the center of doll making. Porcelain was discovered for doll making. Using it to create dolls was one of its first uses. The dolls weren’t for playing with because they were fragile. They were just for show. Sometimes they were used as a decorative piece for a fireplace mantle or the top of a table.
However, the material wasn’t what made the dolls popular. It was the subject matter. Most collectable dolls were fashioned after adults. With the invention of porcelain, the French Bebe doll was modelled after a child. From that time on, most all dolls were modelled after children. Later years brought on the rag doll, corn husk doll, and other types of dolls. At that time, all dolls were pasted down to the next generation where they became the collectibles dolls of today.
Nowadays, people’s hobby of doll making turns into their profession as the supply and demand of dolls including doll accessories grows. Doll clothes, doll shoes, and doll houses are in big demand, especially if they are hand crafted instead of machine made.
Hand Crafted Dolls
Most hand crafted dolls sell out extremely fast. The demand is quite high. The next time you’re looking for that special gift think about giving a doll. There are many types of dolls you can choose from such as gothic dolls, fantasy dolls, historic dolls, and other types of dolls.
