Things to Consider for a Memorable First Wedding Dance by Karine Hart
One of the highlights of the wedding reception is the first wedding dance. In recent years, the first wedding dance has veered away from the traditional waltz with couples dancing to contemporary dance music complete with the disco choreography although most couples will still dance to the romance of a love song or a waltz movement. No matter your choice in the first wedding dance, here are a few useful tips to make it one memorable dance of a lifetime that your guests will enjoy, too.
Song Selection
The first step is to select the song you will be dancing to. We suggest choosing a familiar piece preferably your theme song since the lyrics, melody and rhythm have meaning in your relationship, which can even be the theme of your picture slideshow during the pre-wedding activities.
But of course, you also have the choice of going for other types of music since it is your wedding dance. You must ensure that you have listened to the song many times and determined that it fits your needs in music to which you and your new spouse can dance to.
Dance Lessons
You may also want to hire a private dance choreographer to provide assistance in making the first wedding dance look and feel great. The money spent will be worth the grace during the actual dance – no stepping on toes, no missed cues and no falling to the floor like a rag doll. We recommend taking on the dance lesson for 5-8 times at least 3 months before the big day.
Even when the dance has been choreographed, practice will make it near-perfect. You can plan practicing for at 20 minutes 3 times a week until such time that you are, to put it in romantic terms, dancing as one especially in a waltz.
Dress Considerations
Brides, do consider the design of your dress when planning the first wedding dance. Take, for example, a dress with a 10-meter non-detachable train. You cannot expect to be whirled around in it lest both you and your mate become entangled in a spider web of sheer fabric. If you are wearing a cocktail dress to the reception, being dipped too low during a tango movement can lead to wardrobe malfunctions.
You might try dancing in a similar outfit as the wedding gown to avoid such embarrassing malfunctions. Your shoes must also be considered as falling flat on you face during a hip–hop routine may be memorable but not in a good way.
Plan the Program
You have to coordinate with other people aside from the choreographer, too, regarding your first wedding dance. Your DJ must be informed what kind of music is to be played, when it is to be played and what follows after it. We strongly suggest giving the pre-recorded CD of the song so that there will be no mix-up.
Your emcee must also be informed when to introduce the dance so that your guests will pay attention. Even your photographer and videographer must be provided with the program so that they, too, cam position themselves to capture the best shots.
Of course, you must enjoy you first dance as a married couple. You will not be vilified if you make mistakes in the steps – just keep on dancing and smiling.
