The BJD have parts of hard plastic with elastic that allows them to move and be styled in any fashion. They are mostly made in Japan, South Korea, and china and are referred to as Asian ball jointed dolls. They are about 24 inches for large dolls and 16 inches for the smaller dolls, usually called mini dolls. The tiniest is 4 inches. They are perfect for any doll collection. The older BJD were made of clay with movable arms and legs attached with elastic bands. The modern ball jointed dolls are much easier to pose in any style you want. There are even clubs and Internet forums that meet locally to talk about dolls, especially ball jointed dolls.
In San Francisco, they have a doll collector club called GoGaDoll and another one in Texas called BJDC. There is also doll friendly maid cafés where enthusiasts can meet and talk about their dolls. If you’re a doll collector, then BJD is a must for any serious doll collector.
